walls and corridors covered with paintings and sculptures. The colouring is wonderfully preserved. It does not appear to have faded one iota in all the thousands of years which must have elapsed since they were executed.

One picture in the tomb of Mera shows that worthy gentleman playing chess. Mera was a high official under King Teta of the sixth dynasty; so chess must have been played about 2700 years or more B.C. This tomb was discovered in 1893 by M. de Morgan.
