All windows etc. are provided with shutters of mushrabeul work, or according to Lane ("The Modern Egyptians") meshrebeeyeh work. These are lattice work each lath of which is carved into fanciful designs. The old homes are provided with hand carved shutters, but the modern dwellings have them machine made. The term meshrebeeyeh signifies "a place for drinking" or "for drinking" because the vessels containing drinking water are placed behind this lattice work during hot days so that it may be in the way of any cool breeze.
