General. He knew nothing of the reasons for their poor condition, but I scarcely thought it advisable to tell him so. All I could do was to take the "strafing" look penitent, and afterwards carry on as before. Generals are privileged to rouse on someone when they are put out, and we were merely unfortunate in coming under his notice when he was after a victim.

I anticipated a stay of several months in this spot but as usual, our luck is out. I was informed last night that we would be out "stunting" in a very short time, and to be prepared for some very rough and heavy work. They say there is no rest for the wicked. I wonder if I am so very wicked.
