My dear Elsie,
I received your nice long letter some little time back. We heard yesterday that another of our mails had gone down. We have lost quite a number lately.
Eric should be in England any day now, & I am sorry that I am not there to meet him. However Jane will be in England. I doubt, though, whether she will have very much spare time now for she has started work. I am awfully glad she has, for it will give her less time to worry. She was to have gone yesterday to Lady Lawson in Wiltshire for a month. She will stay there & give Lady Lawson lessons in French. After that Jane is trying to make arrangements to do Red Cross Work.
We have had a week of rain which is most unpleasant. The weather seems to have broken at last & today is nice & sunny.
I was very interested the other day, watching a "butter-dog" at work. Most of the farms keep a dog to make the butter. The dog is trained to run inside a large wheel about 8 ft diameter & 18 inches wide. This wheel is connected by gear to the churn. When the dog runs the big wheel revolves, & so turns the churn & makes the butter.
