What's the use of grumbling though, things are no better for it.
Eric is bound to feel his new work rather hard at first especially after his spell of only just one or two [indecipherable] to look after.
In the last mail I had a P.C. from Annie Davies and a letter from Mr Harry. Wilfred or "Brig "as he is always called has sore rashes so the rest of the young Harrys are expected to develop the symptoms. Mrs H. said in her last letter from Will Buchner, he mentioned that he intended changing his name, what to I don't know. When I do hear I will let you know. Perhaps you will hear from Will before I do. It is only once in a while that I hear from him.
As you already know from my former letters, I am not in Cairo. Most of the interesting letters you see and hear of are from the base.
21. 7. 15. This is the third time I have made an attempt to finish this letter. Yesterday I had just settled down in my dug-out to write, when I was called away. Contrary to my usual run of interruptions this was more of a pleasant nature. General Birdwood sent for me. When I stood before him he congratulated me on the D.C.M. and after shaking hands had the usual eulogistic remarks to make. Another man of our Battalion €“ also of old "F" Coy €“ received the same decoration a few weeks back. Out of the four men of this Batt. who received it I was the only man able to be present. So you see I am still lucky.
