My dear Mother,

I am awfully sorry I was not able to write to you last week, but unforeseen circumstances prevented me. I had been leaving my letter writing till the end of the week, when we were called out for Brigade training which lasted for four days. Starting out last Friday morning we did not get back to Camp until midday today (Tuesday).

Just previous to this (Wednesday) the 3rd Batt'n had carried out "Kitchener's Test". This is twenty four hours continuous work. As our's was strung out to 30 hours we should be fit for anything. The Brigadier said he was extremely well pleased with the way the 3rd came through the very severe ordeal. We had our full packs up for the whole time. After a fifteen mile march we went straight into a sham attack. Then attacked all night. Digging ourselves "in", in deep trenches several times. Then marching back fifteen miles next morning. Not many had to give in, but none of us felt like doing a highland fling at the end.
