On Xmas day I had a letter from Mrs Harry. It was as good as a present. I was surprised to learn from it that Buchner (no dots now) is not in the fighting line at all but is with the Hospital staff. In case you do not know his address it is:-
Sergeant L. Buchner
Australian Voluntary Hospital
British Expeditionary Force
Europe.

Mrs Harry said he is doing well. He must be kept busy with the number of wounded coming in daily according to newspaper statements. Several letters have been received here from the front. They all say that this conflict is a "sappers war." On account of this we are doing as much trench digging as drilling nowadays. Our hours for work are from 8 am to 2 pm continuously. Some days we do nothing else but dig different types of trenches. When one has been digging trenches (even in sand) for six hours with a fairly warm sun overhead, a rest becomes most acceptable. Yesterday a good test was given to the Officers, NCOs and Scouts of
