on the sand previously smoothed down. Each tent has a ring of white stones just inside the pegs and these designs are within this Circle. Some of these are very striking and very cleverly done. Many have the kangaroo one side of the door with the emu on the opposite side. Others are more original. A few have worked the new Egyptian flag (three white stars and cresents on a red field) into their design. That outside the Quartermaster's tent is most appropriate. On one side is the representation of a tin of "bully beef" and on the other a loaf of bread.
Christmas day passed off very quietly, more especially for our company as they were on duty. Being still attached to the Machine Gun Section I do not do duty now so my Christmas dinner was postponed until the others came off guard in order that we might all sit down to the feast (?) together. In the morning before Church Service each man was served out with a small plum pudding €“ about a pound. In addition each tent received 4 tins of preserved fruit and two bottles of wine. These luxuries were in addition to the regular ration so we did not do too badly. Naturally during the course of the meal each man had to get on his hind legs and propose a toast. The last few had to cudgle their brains to think of suitable toasts.
