as slow as funerals. I've no only seen one cab since I've been here, the other things they call cabs, are four wheelers. It seems so funny to buy fruit by the pound.

Left Melbourne at 7.40 am Monday morning and got into Ballarat at 11 a.m. The whole country right along is almost as flat as a billiard table, but fertile, especially round Bacchus Marsh. Rev. Harry & Will Buchner met me at the station. He is exceptionally kind to me as you will see presently. We had dinner with him, and when I mentioned about looking for a place to stay at, he say said I was to stop  at his place till he found a place for us. We went down to the School of Mines before dinner & saw Mr. Martell. He also is very nice to us, in fact every body is, & I really think I've been born under a lucky star. He said we were not to attempt to pay any fees until we had regular employment & could afford it. After dinner we walked some miles out to the North Wouh  Hawp Mine to see the Manager, Mr Trethowan. Mr. Harry gave us a letter of introduction. He is going to do whatever he can for us, & if he cannot get us in his own mine, in some other, but he cannot give us any definite word till next Friday. When we came back we went over the Fire Station. They have a "Trophy Room" which is filled with trophies of all descriptions. After tea we walked round Lake Wendouree (3 mls round & 1ml from Mr. Harry's) It is an artificial lake, made from an old swamp, yet it
