the first brigade. One company, machine gun section, and signallers from each battalion left here at 7.15 am. We went south and entrenched ourselves near and in cultivation paddocks at 11 a.m.   We had to be under cover for at that hour the officers etc were brought over the top of a hill facing our trenches and told to see what they could. Previous to this hour I went about 30 yards in front of our gun trench and even knowing where it was, could not distinguish it from the surrounding country. So it was not likely that the scouts a thousand yards away even with the aid of glasses, would discover our hiding place. Provided of course that we did not move about. At 12.10 pm we fired blank ammunition for 10 minutes and at 12.30 stood up and exposed the guns, just to show the men on the hill just where we were. Marching out in the morn, my hands were stiff with the cold. Coming back the perspiration was running off in small streams. As soon as the sun sets the air begins to get cold.

I sent Elsie a bundle of postcards I picked out as being typical. Hope they reach her OK. I will also send others as I come across them.
