My dear Mother,

Elsie's welcome letter & paper to hand yesterday. I was wondering what was the matter when I saw a letter from Elsie and none from you. Was glad to know that it was only because you were busy writing up lectures. Is Dr. Leadbeater in Australia again that you are writing up some of his lectures?

Poor old Eric, how sorry I am that he was not able to get on the "Star of Victoria" with Dr. Pennington. How would it be if he tried for a Commission. I belief it is easier to get one in the first place than to rise to one afterwards. Promotion in the ranks is not as rapid as is generally supposed especially in peace times, by that I mean as we are now where officers and N. C. Os are not being lost through casualties. This is more so in a good company where all the N.C.Os know their work and hang on to their jobs. In one way I am glad that "A" Coy is a good Coy, and yet on the other hand it means that promotion is a very slow process until we get to the front. That reminds me, in addressing
