My dear Mother
You must have thought the finishing of my last letter very abrupt. One of the men from our tent had just received leave & I did not like asking him to wait, for the trams only run every half hour, and I did not want to lose the mail.
If I remember rightly, I was just commencing to tell you about the Citadel. This
place is like a town within a town. Within its walls (fortified) are very large barracks, a palace (now used as officers quarters) and the mosque of Mehemet [also spelt Muhammad] Ali. This mosque is one of the show places of Cairo. Its interest does not lie in its age, but in the building itself and the ornamentation.
