Eric will be able to tell you how these native vendors swarm at strangers on visiting the pyramids. Some want to shine boots, others to wash your hands after crawling about inside. Even on very top of the Cheops pyramid €“ 450' feet high €“ I was accosted with a chap selling cups of black coffee. This man must be a good climber to get there with all the goods he carries, for the way up is not by easy steps.
On the pyramid just mentioned above the whole of the outside casing casing is torn off. This act of vandalism by done by order of the Romans when they came to Egypt for the casing covered the opening to the tombs inside, & to find these the casing of high polished granite blocks were ruthlessly torn away. A little of the casing in the pyramid next to this has been left near the top. Just sufficient to give one an idea of what a magnificent sight these huge structures must have presented with the sun shining on their polished surfaces.
One day I went to the pyramids I was with the left half of our company. We had our photos taken with the Sphynx & Cheops pyramid
