A common washstand with six basins in it for everybody, and only two dirty common roller towels. Only one looking glass for all the steerage passengers. But worse to follow, the I couldn't touch the food nor more could anyone else. The soup was full of weavils, couldn't cut the steak nor put a fork in the potatoes, the bread was sour and the butter rank an and the whole ship overrun with cockroaches and rats. I think I've grumbled enough so now I'll talk about something else. On Saturday afternoon about 3 p.m. we passed close to Gabo Island  €“ it a is a low desolate island of a red colour due to the red granite. We got into Melbourne at 6 p.m. (started from Sydney at 5.45 p.m. Friday so we took 48 ¼ hours for the journey).
