The Serapeum is an enormous subterranean tomb devoted exclusively to the sacred bulls of old Egypt. The bull or Apis was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians as it was supposed to contain the divine spirit. The bulls were chosen by the Priests by certain distinguishing marks. Sometimes quite a considerable time would elapse between the death of one bull and the choice of another. All the bulls from the eighth dynasty to the time of the Ptolemies were buried in the Serapeum. Unfortunately when opened up in 1860 by Mariette
