when visiting the Rifaiya [also spelt Al-Rifa'i] Mosque. Part of this mosque is partitioned off as the private church of the ruler of Egypt. This part is only opened on the days when the ruler visits the mosque. The day I went the Sultan had been to pray so I was allowed in. Though only a small portion of the whole building, the richness of the interior makes up for this deficiency. All the utensils etc are made of solid silver. Fancy th candlesticks of silver standing five or six feet high. The Sultan's own Koran is kept in a silver casket beautifully engraved and embossed. One of the Korans (of which there are about a dozen), has all the letters through €“
