of the interior. It is named after its founder Mehemet Ali, but it is just as frequently alluded to as the "Alabaster" or "Citadel" Mosque.

Mehemet Ali must have had a grim notion of humour for this place of worship is built on the spot where the Marmelukes (about 400 men) were shot down in cold blood by the same Mehemet Ali, but more of this part of the story anon.

As one of the names imply, the interior walls are composed wholly of beautifully marked and polished alabaster. The outer walls  €“ in common with many of the Cairo mosques  €“ are made from the casing stones ruthlessly torn from the Giza pyramids.
