the cord, any unevenness in the surface can be immediately detected.

Another method used was more intricate. A hollow drill made of copper with semi precious stones inserted in the face for cutting just like our diamond boring machines, was turned until a sufficient depth had been obtained. The core was then broken off. By counting the ridges, the distance could be calculated to the bottom, and when boring a new hole by giving the correct number of turns a bottom level with the former should be reached. It sounds rather complicated but apparently it worked. No paintings of this process have been found, but several of the tools themselves have been discovered.
