My dear Mother,
Your letters of 1st & 8th ult just to hand. I think this last mail was the most acceptable ever received. I don't mean only personally, but generally. We were all out of reading matter, and seemed shut off from everywhere. Things always seem better after they have been denied for a time.
I am enclosing two clippings. One concerns Will Buchner and is taken from a Ballarat paper. By this last mail I also had a letter from Will himself. He is at present in the Isle of Wight.
He came 6th out of 28 in his last exam & is well pleased with himself.
The other clipping is from the Emmaville paper & explains itself.
When I can get hold of one, I must send you one of the post cards issued
