was not hindered in any way. Many shells burst round this station. The soldier is not the only man who can be a hero in war time by a long way.

Tourists are conveyed from the station (Barrage) to the Barrage itself by donkeys, or in small trams. These latter are just a platform on four wheels. A seat on the platform holds four persons  €“ two facing the front and two the rear. When loaded two niggers start pushing, and away you go at quite a respectable pace.

The object of the Barrage is to regulate the water going into the five main irrigation channels. A series of sluice gate regulates the flow. Each gate is really itself a triple gate. At each barrage on one side is a lock, for the boats going up or down the Nile. The whole thing is a fine piece of Engineering work, and I would liked to have got a few technical details about it, but could not get onto the right track.

I feel sure though that thousands of people go there, and hardly know what the Barrage is or anything about it. The chief attraction seems to be the Gardens. These without exaggeration, put the Botanical Gardens of
