My dear Mother

Your letter of the 28th ult. to hand.

This letter is being written under difficulties. I am Corp. of the Guard today and have to remain on duty 24 hours. A few hours of the night are very quiet, but of course I have to stay awake to take the reliefs to the various sentry posts. Naturally the men don't like the days on which guard falls, because it does not carry any privileges such as time off. The Company goes out for the usual day's training; comes home and goes straight on guard. It will have to be done at the front, so the officers think we ought to try in peace time (that is for us) to carry on as near as
