Lt. Smith who joined up in the 3rd Batt. as a private is in camp here as Medical Officer. He joined up as a private to see some of the fun as he called it. However he has a bullet in his lung now, & being unfit for active service has taken on the job of M.O. which he is able to do quite well, having had a good practice before leaving Sydney.
He & I have been taking walks about the country in the afternoons. The other afternoon we went to Wayhill, which is about half way to Andover. It is a pretty little village, all the cottages being thatched. Instead of coming back for Mess we had tea at one of the quaint old inns & got home just before dark, which is about 10.30 pm. at this time of the year.
I have been made Assistant Adjutant whilst in this camp, so I have plenty to do. It is just as well, otherwise one would become very miserable.
