I am glad you are sending me some woollen socks. It is terribly hard to get decent ones here. Even a moderate pair costs 2/6 and they last no time. Of course with these big boots thin ones are of no earthly value. When sending them you might also include another Balaclava Cap and a pair of woollen gloves  €“ or the leather pair with fur edges that I left behind.

The last letter I received from you was written on my birthday. Naturally I knew your thoughts would be with me then, even if you had not written.

I should have mentioned when speaking of Mrs. Bryant that she has a son who is a wireless operator on one of the warships. I think she said the "Endeavour" though I am not too sure.

Rather a funny tale is told of one of the 2nd Contingent officers. Before coming out to Mena he dined well in town, and it was moonlight when he was shown his tent. Suddenly he observed a huge tent on the hill. Looking at his own small tent he thought he was badly done by, and asked "What blank swell lives in that tent, hic?" Next morning by daylight and a clear head he could see that his big "tent" belonged to old
