we marched to the Kasr-el-Nil Barracks where we formed up  €“ that is sized the companies etc. The Kasr-el-Nil Barracks were built by Napoleon for quartering his soldiers when the French occupied Egypt. They are of immense size. But to get back to my tale. To get to our appointed destination we had to pass the Khedive Palace where the late Khedive dwelt and where the new Sultan was installed and will take up his residence. This building might also be described by the word applied to so many Egyptian structures, statues etc  €“ immense. One can get a splendid view of the place owing to the Palace square extending to a considerable distance in front. As we passed a section of the Egyptian Body guard had already formed up by the palace gates and the Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps (volunteers) had lined the Palace Square.

Of the procession itself I need not say much, as I posted you papers giving descriptions of the event. Everything was on such a gorgeous scale & so oriental that the spectacle struck me as most impressive and made me feel for a few seconds like I always do on witnessing something grand for the first time, that is when a youngster I wanted to cry. I suppose to admit of such a feeling to most people would appear very silly.
