I enjoyed the trip immensely. Like everything else the palace €“ which has been turned into a museum €“ is closed. The building is immense yet it does not look out of place. The architect of such a place must have been a wonderful man. Standing in front of the palace, the gardens stretch out as far as the eyes can see. And such gardens. Fountains, statues and canals everywhere, small temples, hidden away in the woods present pleasant surprises when wandering about. About half a mile to the N.W. from the palace is the Grand Trianon, created by Louis XIV for Madame de Maintenon. A little part of this is the Little Trianon erected by Louis XVI for Madame du Barry, and afterwards much used by Marie Antoinette where she used to play at making butter. I don't suppose she ever really did make much. The whole grounds must be simply glorious in the spring and summer. I would like to have got some photos. As it has been raining or very dull every day, I don't think I shall be able to take many before leaving Paris.
