You might ask how it comes about that the cities are westernised and also why so many motor cars are to be seen racing about. I don't suppose one car in a hundred is driven by an Egyptian. Other things introduced from the west are introduced and run by westerners.
The Egyptian does not seem to have a mechanical mind at all. This was proved some years back by the Educational Dept. A number of young men were given a five years' course to fit them for mechanics. A record was compiled of the future of the men who had passed through this particular show. Out of a few hundred who had been given this free secondary education, only three remained mechanics. That is Egypt all over. Always you will find the opposite of what you expect.
The method of serving dinner at Mr. Chinn's is quite Oriental. The host claps his hands and in slides the silent obsequious Mohamed €“ nearly all servants are Mohamed.
