It is a wonderful sight steaming towards the Straits. First of all the Sierra Nevada looms up on the northern horizon. Then the African coast comes into view with Apes Hill standing up above all the other hills. The higher peaks of the Sierra Nevada were all cloud capped as we came along so we could not see the snow.
We anchored some little distance outside the harbour, and we all thought we were to be denied the pleasure of going ashore. The skipper was however only waiting berthing orders.
Almost as soon as the boat was securely berthed, disembarkation commenced. Naval men went first €“ to the Naval Hospital. Slade and Oswin had to go and so broke up our happy party.
We were not taken off until the following day at 2 pm. As all the hospitals are full we are quartered
