Before commencing to play the canvas is wetted. This makes the canvas shrink, and in doing so makes a splendid drum. The side drummer is a bonnie. The 3rd would like to have him in their band.

Yesterday afternoon I was standing near one of the alley ways, when a man coming out tripped over the high partition which is placed at the entrance. He was carrying two plates of salt & pepper. You never saw such a coughing & sneezing match in all your life. Naturally were a crowd of men were standing round the door. It does not matter where one goes on the main deck, a crowd will always be there.

The bunks hammocks are fairly close together. If a man is restless and throws his arms over the side, he is bound to hit the face of the man next to him. We are about the best off of any, so far as comfort is concerned. Our division is almost amidships, and is fairly well ventilated. It will be different once the tropics are reached. Suppose then they will allow us to go on deck to sleep.

The horses must feel a very long trip like this severely. They are jammed into a stall, & cannot even turn round. There are only sixteen aboard this ship. They are horses belonging to the officers of the 3rd & 4th Battns & Head Quarters, for the Head
