The same skill was shown in the setting out of the base. Petrie says that if all the errors were together plotted on paper to full scale they could be covered with the thumb. It is not known how they obtained such a perfect square because there is a large core of rock in the middle that would prevent the diagonal corners being seen from one another.

When Herodotus visited Egypt he wrote that some of casing stones (for the casing was not removed until the 14th century when the Sultan Hassan Mosque was commenced) had inscriptions
