a native store & had to pay 7/6 for it. The same rope in Alexandria would cost 9d. It is costing us a fair amount to live now that we can eat. The food supplied is disgraceful. We can buy our own bread and butter (tinned). Also meat & fish  €“ both tinned. Fruit also tinned. How can a man build up from nothing to normal strength when he is getting no fresh food.

I dont feel much better now than I did a couple of weeks ago. One gets to a certain stage & sticks there. I feel that a marked improvement will be noticed in all of us so soon as we get away from here.

Have heard that Nurse Pike  €“ a friend of Nurse Smith  €“ is now
