not a single one of the twenty four sarcophagi contained a mumified bull. The tombs had been rifled before, probably at the time of the Arab conquest. The mortuary characters are at the sides of long drives or galleries. Each contains a huge granite sarcophagus averaging 13 feet by 7 feet by 11 feet high. Some of them weigh sixty five tons. The sarcophagus is made in two pieces only. The body which is hollowed out to receive the mummy case, and the [indecipherable]. Only three have inscriptions on the outsides. One has a ladder fixed to the side to enable tourists to climb inside.
