3.

While in the street we stood with fixed bayonets and each man had been provided with twenty rounds of ammunition before leaving camp in case any of the natives should run amok. However everything went off very smoothly as though there were absolutely no ill feeling against England in certain quarters. This feeling is known to exist in certain quarters inhabited mostly by Turks or their subjects, because shortly before we arrived a plot was discovered to murder all the Christians in Cairo. I have since learnt that that was one reason we were shipped here in such a hurried manner. Of course this is not generally known. It was a lieutenant in the Egyptian army who gave the plot away. He was not shot however but has been exiled.

Sir George Reid and Hon. Mackenzie (New Zealand) arrived in Cairo on Thursday in order to inspect the Australian and New Zealand forces before they go to the front. They have not been out to the camp yet. Every thing has been "dolled" up ready for when Sir George does come along. Most of the tents have designs marked round the outside with white pebbles, glass etc.
