The roof of the King's chamber is made with nine large blocks of granite. These are all cracked as also are the columns of the retaining chambers, and some of the blocks are pulled out of the limestone sides. These cracks & movements are not due to the weight but to earthquakes which visited Egypt sometime about the ninth century.
No mummies were found by modern explorers in the first or second pyramid, but the third held its treasures till recently. The great pyramid was probably broken into soon after it was built, and all the statues destroyed through hatred. The statues of Chephren were found down a well in the temple of the Sphynxes. The reason that the art of mummifying has been lost is that during the fifth and sixth centuries all Christians (and the inhabitants of Egypt were all Christian then) were forbidden to preserve their dead, it being considered wrong according to their religious views. Instead they adopted the dirty custom of carrying human bones in their pockets. This custom really sprang from the time of animal worship. So that some of their arguments were rather contradictory.
