I wonder if the French soldiers were struck with the beauty of the view as we were. Napoleon had the whole of the cliff overlooking the town strongly fortified. We passed down into the city by the old French Military road.

Speaking of the Turks a little further back reminds me that I had a conversation with a Mr.Truebridge last week. He is an American missionary and was in Turkey during those awful massacres a few years back. Many of his remarks were of interest because this place has been under the Turkish yoke and consequently many Turks or people with a Turkish strain are to be found in Egypt. The majority are very ignorant and are easily led by a few fanatical musselmen. When not in a religious frenzy they are hospitable and even have a slight sense of humour. He (Truebridge) told the following tale to illustrate the latter.
