hearing it spoken. I have been trying to form a class & take French lessons but my efforts so far have been unsuccessful but I am living in hopes.
Our camp €“ Mena Camp €“ is just at the front of the pyramids. Until a few days ago we were without tents, and bivouacked in the Dunes. On waking in the mornings there were the pyramids standing guard over us with the sun rising behind them, making to me a solemn & grand sight.
I must not finish up without a word about the hotels. Two of these €“ the "Continental" & "Shepheards" €“ are reckoned amongst the best in the world. Both are most sumptuously fitted up, and in many respects are the similar. Stone steps (marble) take one from the street level to a raised verandah. This verandah is fully 50' ver wide, and has small tables & chairs scattered about amidst palms & ferns. On each side of the huge main entrance is a nubian. A streak of charcoal in these men would look white. These men show visitors in, and conduct them to where they want to go, without a word.
