reported to be having a very gay time. Douglas' weight was given as one ton something. He was mounted on Flags (Signaller's Horse) Flag - Begbie Lamp. Both riders came out in approved jockey costume. Carter also wore a false nose. The conditions stipulated that if a horse was to lay down the rider could carry him home. No rider to be allowed to whisper in his horse's ear, but other back-block practices could be employed. Should the judge think the race would not finish before dark he could declare the race finished at any time; on the other hand if there was plenty of time he could order several more rounds. Of course there was only the one round €“ just round the battalion grounds. The finish was very good, Carter beating Douglas by a neck. Douglas disputed the decision, whereupon Carter jumped off his horse, pulled Douglas off & started horsewhipping him. Many thought at first it was in earnest. All the other items were very good. Carter won the relay race with four men from his platoon. The tugs-of-war created great excitement. No. 3 Platoon won this event. In the sack races the competitors had to crawl 25 yards on
