stuff one could imagine being stowed into a pack. The first item was a baby's feeding bottle, because he often tells us we need spoon feeding. The next thing pulled out was a bottle of whiskey. One day Major Brown (then Capt) found an empty whiskey bottle in our lines and stopped our leave because of it. So soon as Sgt Stewart saw it he gave "About Turn", had a good swig and when finished gave "about turn" again. In addition there were numerous mementoes from his supposed lady love. Every one of the officers went through the trial in good heart. I cannot imagine the English officers from what I have seen of them taking part in the amusements of the men as ours do. The prize was for the drill by was presented by the Defaulters (old and new) of "A" Coy. to Major Brown. It consisted of an "Infantry Training". As we could not buy one in town, I wrapped my 1911 one up, as I recently bought a 1914 book.
Another very funny item was a horse race between Lts Carter and Douglas. Both are good horsemen but were mounted on two very stiff old crocks. Carter was mounted on Cracker (Machine Gun horse) Oil can €“ Spare part box. Weight not to be given until Carter returned from Cairo. Thus ran the programme.
