My dear Mother,

Still in Paris and having a good time. This is the wrong time to see Paris. Not only does the winter change the appearance so much, but the war has made a wonderful difference. In many respects it is more dead than London. There are no motor buses  €“ all having been commandeered by the military authorities. Most trams stop running at 8 pm  and trains at 10 pm so it is not much use being out at night. The hours regulating the serving of drinks to military men are very strict. Soldiers can only be served during meal hours, and even then spirits and liqueurs are forbidden. Nearly all places of amusement, and all museums etc are closed. Really therefore I am only seeing the shell of Paris. But even that is really wonderful, because so many of the beauty spots cannot be closed up.

Last Tuesday Annie took a day off from work and we went to Versailles. Unfortunately it rained all day, but in spite of the weather
