Baghdad, the City of the Caliphs, does indeed look a fairy city on a summers day with all its towers and minarets reflected in the mirage which makes the city look as if it had been built on a lake. If you wish to retain the impression that Baghdad is a beautiful place, the best way is to return without going closer. Instead of grand palaces and harems you will find a heap of ruins not fit for habitation, a dirty river with muddy banks and a bewildering mixture of Arabs, Jews, soldiers & dogs, the latter at one time were in the majority, but the shotguns of the M.Ps. have thinned their ranks somewhat.
