My Dear Mother,
Have just received one of your letters dated April 6th also a big load of papers. The letter came here before, but it was when I had gone into hospital. Though I was only away a few days it was sent back to the base and has only just come to light. There were several other letters chasing me round the hospital in company with yours.
Though the papers came about four days ago, I have not had a chance to see one yet. Being on special work means at times days without any spare time. I hope to have a go at them today though. Arthur Hine is with me now to give a bit of assistance. He is a fine fellow and most conscientious so I know things will go along alright should I be away for a few hours.
Your letter was in answer to the one I wrote telling you about the case of small pox we had in Mena Camp. I was amused at you saying that it "was a scare against vaccination." I should have told you that in nearly every case, the men had escaped being vaccinated. The ones who had not been vaccinated at all, all died.
The few cases who had been vaccinated, only got it in a mild form, and recovered & not a single death being recorded. You were jumping at conclusions through me not giving you full details.
