No.1 Command Depot
Perham Down
Andover Hants.
5.9.16
My dear Mother,
Still stuck in this Camp. No sign yet of the Adj. coming back, & the Col. has refused to listen to any suggestions of mine, until I can be relieved of the job. Now that I am fit, I feel that I ought to be out doing a bit more.
We now have a mascot & a band for this Depot. The mascot is a young kangaroo. He eats so much you can almost see the little beggar grow. He is going to be a big chap apparently. The 4th Tunnelling Coy brought him across from Australia. They have just been ordered to France, & thought it better to leave him here than to cart him across to the firing line. Naturally everyone makes a great fuss over him.
We were very lucky in getting a band for this Command. Some time back I heard unofficially that a band was leaving Egypt for England, so I wrote in to H.Q. bright & early & asked that it might be attached to us. This was done & when training battalions asked for the band they found it had already been promised.
