[Page 53]

These require special treatment & the best method is to get a vinette cut out in dark cardboard exactly the shape of the figure then a thin gold border & afterwards the frame very dark brown & green & of course thin, absolutley plain no fancy work about it at all, no varnished frame either just stained or oiled.  It will look lovely in the hall, get say two of them done, they belong to the 15th century.  With regard to my sketches I fancy that these are not too bad, some were much sought after by the people on the Osterley, but I kept the best for you.  It would surprise you to know how long they take to execute, particularly that monument of Cecil Rhodes, it was difficult. The "Arcadians" took my fancy I love that little thing very much. I guess I'm thrusting a lot of work onto you but you will never regret getting them done, generally they are out of the common & may represent grotesque tastes but no-one can by any stretch of imagination term them depraved or ugly. Do not say you're going to take them to Auckland next time you go, pack them away.

[See image for sketches in the margin with the comments, "Brown Border cut out to shape of figure", and for the second sketch, "absolutely plain frame very thin", "Border", "Cecil Rhodes Monument", "one of the others" and "Sierra Leone Lighthouse".]
