acting in the hope that it would possibly be a comfort to them, I posted it this morning.
The road led me thro villages close up to the lines one was held for a short time by Fritz we drove him out & in retalliation he has shelled it heavily. It would be almost impossible to imagine that a few weeks ago it knew nothing of war, today every house is in ruins, dead horses lie around & the stench is awful, smoke was still rising from one of the heaps of broken blackened bricks, the debris contains lots of broken furniture, pots etc. mine goodness it is a mess, traces of old Fritz were seen in the shape of bits of equipment. I could hardly conceive it to be possible to reduce this little town so quickly & often. I wonder what the people will think when they see their homes again. As I have before remarked the numerous crucifixes seem to have a charmed life, they stand unharmed above
