My dear Stan,
Your letter of Heaven knows how long ago reached me over here. First of all my heartiest congratulations on the M.C. You are too modest about yourself altogether old chap. Why your deeds of derring do and your dauntless disregard of danger have been the talk of the Engineers since I reached France. It is splendid that old "B" Coy has at last got a decoration and very fitting too that its O.C. should be the first to break the ice. Good luck to you. I am awfully pleased.
I think you said you had heard a rumour that I had had a crack - too true - was on the night of Ville on the night of 22.5.16 with a W.P. when a piece of shell found the centre of my forehead - punched its way through and pulled up 3 inches further in - so actually I did have a jolly close go for it and have a devil of a lot to be thankful for in being here now.
