My dear Father Mother & Sister,
My letters have been short lately, obviously because there is nothing doing, my jobs are practically nil & for the past 3 weeks may be summed [summoned ?] up on occasional walks up to the nearest trenches, today the snow lay on the ground & being pretty cold I walked up a distance of at least 5 miles - had to get warm - cruised along a bit of a job & with the engineer officer, an old Sydney friend of mine, we walked into a depopulated town very much larger than Wanganui & Aramoho, on every side real evidence of bombardment holes thro walls, broken down houses etc. it was uncanny a glance into the rooms shewed the furniture, ornaments, tables just as the people had left them, it seemed as though they had gone out
