My dear Florrie,

Am just about to set off for a trip to the trenches its not much of a cop for some rain has fallen & I'll bet those old duckboards will be like walking along a greasy pole - my oath mud is slippy, my sergeant came down at least 6 or 8 times last night, its not so bad if the duckboards are continuous they're not & in the dark you trust to providence & providence has beforehand shifted some of the slats & "lets you down", its not so bad if you stop within 12" its when you go down over the knee that you start to wonder why you ever came to the war.

We set off yesterday at 3 pm & arrived at a spot overlooking Fritzies country about 5 pm, he was fairly quiet so we got out over the top to look at a site, a few bodies lay around, seeing old Fritz hadn't troubled to look at us, I
