I didn't wait to find that out for like a flash I rushed across country to temporary headquarters to get the guns lifted.
Scouts reported that they could not find the body of Mr Miles. I felt inclined to go out but was really worn out & my job being finished I dodged Fritzies shells all the way back to the general headquarters, my eyes were sore with gas but my welcome made up for all my troubles, the colonel shook hands with me & murmured something about saving the honour of the battalion, the surly adjutant even smiled. Johnie Prentice slapped me on the shoulder & said "you'll do me". Bruce - he died today - congratulated me, it would have done your eyes good. I was amused & was only too happy to have got out with a whole skin. One Major wrote a note "Good work last night", my corporal wishes to recommend me & is quite wrathful
