I went into Ma's room & told I was writing to you & asked for her message & here it is "Give Malcolm my love & tell him I hope he will soon come back again".  I wish you could but from what news we get out here there seems very little chance of the war coming to an end for a long time bad luck to the Germans there seems to be swarms of them. Ma has been ill over a year now. Do you remember Posters hotel? It was completely burned to the ground last Thursday night & burnt so quickly that nothing was saved. The fire quite illuminated the town & hills for miles around. There were 90 visitors staying there & most of them were heavy losers.

Your old friend Dolly Buckrell is coming up to Wanganui next week she has two children now so is quite settled down. Iris is still single & still in some office.

Our lift was is almost completed the contractors have had awful bad luck there has been two slips & they struck silver sand I expect you know what that is. Labour is so scarce that the contractors have had to work night & day themselves.
