Yesterday I went to Ipswich. Mother will call to mind Margaret Catchpole, it is a darling quaint place but unfortunately Dams & Civilisation & Progress are sweeping away little bits of antiquity. In the Museum is an original letter written by Margaret Catchpole two or 3 days prior to her embarkation for Van Diemans Land - am sending P.C.s of the place for your album - I guess you will have to get another one before very long. The people in Ipswich have quite a dialect I could hardly understand it. We had lunch at the Great White Horse - Dickens stayed here, we saw his room the walls are decorated with pictures dipicting incidents from his works, Mr Pickwick, he lost his way during the night & roamed into the wrong room - that of a lady who asked after Mr Pickwick, got to sleep, etc. - read Pickwick papers. The Museum is rich in Roman remains, pots etc. I noticed particularly the "Ducking" chair, used in the early days for ducking the witches & also some ancient churches, the Wolsley Gateway is awfully interesting. There are lots of antique shops where you can purchase everything from a bed warmer to grandfather clock. I am sending a guide purchased in Ancient House see photos. Charles II hid in this house after the Battle of Worcester, the oak panelled room is exquisite.
