My dear Mother Father & Sister
This morning we had a little change, instead of going out to the trenches I had chg. of 20 of our men to go as a guard of honour to be present whilst General Birdwood pinned on the ribbons & awards won during the last few stunts. The morning was cold and snow fell, not sufficient to spoil things, we formed the 3 sides of a square & the general inspected us, he is a fine type & stood out besides the smaller fry, there were no red bands or polished buttons about him & occassionally as he passed along he would stop to speak to a man, his general bearing was pleasant & with a simple handshake he congratulated each of the recipients, at the conclusion we marched past & one felt as he returned
